Every core of my being LOVES to paint intuitively, but I haven't always worked this way....
There was nothing really spontaneous or instinctive about the way I painted a few years ago. I planned the birds & completely controlled the patterns that formed their plumage. I knew what I wanted to paint & how I wanted it to look, way before I got out the paintbrushes.
This served me well for a time. My intricately patterned birds were loved by lots of lovely people and still are. (I run a wee Etsy shop full of my fancy birds if you wish to take a gander…..don’t run away just yet though, you still have much reading to do 😉)
After a while, I started to experiment with loose backgrounds for the birds, digitally at first & then with real paint.
It was only when I really stopped & listened to my body did I realise that I felt uptight & thoroughly bored whilst painting the birds BUT was immensely enjoying painting the backgrounds.
The backgrounds were pure play - splashing paint around to see what might happen, making my own 'paintbrushes' with all kinds of objects from around the home & garden, allowing the paint to decide for itself where it wanted to go.
Now, I was in my element, constantly grinning to myself, my very happy place!!
Here was where I felt free to experiment, free from perceived rules, free from the worry of how others might respond to my work. I was having so much fun, I didn't care whether others liked the results or not.
Now, after many years of working this way, it still fills me with joy to watch the paint interact with different mediums & create its own magical marks. I never get bored of working this way & feel incredibly honoured when students trust me enough to guide them through this freeing process.
I've been privileged to watch the exciting 'lightbulb moment' with tons of students this past year.
If you've been craving the freedom to loosen up in your art, to begin the journey of experiencing pure joy throughout the whole process, you're going to love my upcoming Abstract Botanical online course!
